Area of Expertise: Defining the Scope of Work

What solutions can Ripple Effect offer?

  • Scope of work creation
    • planning and requirements gathering
    • outlining
    • writing
  • Project execution and management

What is it?

The scope of work defines the purpose and expectations of the project, the timeline and duration of the project, and the planned budget for the project.  The scope of work should be clear, precise, and complete.

Why is this important?

The scope of work is usually a binding agreement between the client and the company, so it is important to get it right.  It demonstrates to the client that the company understands the work that is being proposed.  It also sets the budget for the project.  At the end of the project, the company will be measured against the scope to determine whether objectives were met.

What problems does this solve?

The scope of work gets all parties “on the same page.”  An accurate scope reduces:

  • confusion about project purpose or goals
  • scope creep
  • miscommunications or misunderstandings
  • subjective decision-making on the part of the client or the company
